I heard about the head lamp lantern trick and have been dying to try it. I finally had the chance a few months ago during a power outage. All you do is throw a headlamp around a full gallon of water and it creates a nice ambient lantern. It is a clever trick that creates a soft ambient light that is great for reading, writing or illuminating. It could come in handy during a power outage, while camping or just as a fun little project to show the kids.

Flickr user “listorama” took this picture of his that he was using on a picnic table. The milk jug filled with water cuts down the glare of the headlamp and diffuses the light very nicely. I have not had the chance to try it yet but I read somewhere that adding salt to the water will make the light brighter. Let me know how it works if you give it a try. Just leave me a comment below or visit me on Facebook.
